The Home Billabong is one of the Top End’s well-kept secrets, located a short distance from Wildman Wilderness Lodge. With an abundance of overhanging paperbarks, intermingled with pandanus and mangroves, there is a spectacle of flora to be seen amongst the water lilies and reeds.
But definitely no swimming here, there are plenty of salt and freshwater crocodiles, including our 5-meter resident, aptly named, Big Boy.
You only need raise your sights slightly, to delight in an abundance of birdlife, both local and visiting, including Jabiru, White Bellied Sea Eagles, Magpie Geese, Whistling Ducks, Ibis, Egrets and more. This naturally occurring water pocket is fed by the rising waters of the Mary River, becoming landlocked as the monsoon season finishes and the water levels lower.
